It was the middle of the night when I woke to the sound of knocking—firm, deliberate. I opened the door to find officers standing on my porch. My stomach dropped. My husband had been shot in the line of duty. In that moment, the world blurred. Fear took over.
- Was he alive?
- Was he coming home?
In the days that followed, as he fought to recover, I saw two very different responses unfold from the women who loved him most—his mother and mine.
Two Mothers, Two Perspectives
One mother was consumed by anger. She wanted justice, revenge—anything to make sense of what had happened. Her son had nearly been taken from her, and she couldn’t accept it. The fear, the helplessness, the rage—it all boiled over.
The other mother chose gratitude. She acknowledged the fear but clung to the miracle that he survived. She saw the skilled officers and medics who saved him, the prayers that carried him through, the second chance we had been given.
Both reactions were raw. Both were valid.
The Choice We Face
Trauma doesn’t just happen to officers—it happens to families, too. The emotions are real, and they’re justified. But perspective shapes how we heal.
Staying in anger and fear can consume us. It can harden us, steal our peace, and keep us stuck in a cycle of bitterness. But shifting our mindset—choosing gratitude, even in pain—can give us strength.
Shifting Our Mindset
As police spouses, we live with uncertainty. We can’t control the dangers of the job. But we can control how we respond. We can focus on what was almost lost, or we can be thankful for what remains.
That night on my porch, my world changed. But in the days that followed, I realized my perspective could shape how I moved forward. I still feel the fear, the anger—but I refuse to live there. Because in this life, mindset is everything.
