Stage 1: Curiosity
At first, I wanted to hear everything—the action, the adrenaline, the behind-the-scenes details of my husband’s job. Every story fascinated me.
- “What happened next?”
- “Did you make an arrest?”
I was drawn in by the excitement, unaware of the weight behind his words.
Stage 2: Concern for Safety
As time passed, my curiosity shifted to concern. I began listening not for the thrill but to reassure myself that he was okay.
- “Were you hurt?”
- “Did anything dangerous happen tonight?”
I hung on to every detail, trying to piece together how safe he really was.
Stage 3: Only the Big Stories
Eventually, the everyday calls blurred together. I found myself tuning in only when something major happened.
- “Wait, that sounds serious. Tell me more.”
I didn’t realize I was missing the daily stress that quietly chipped away at him.
Stage 4: Listening to Support
Then, I learned that my role wasn’t to satisfy my curiosity or calm my fears—it was to support him.
I stopped pushing for details and let him share what he needed to share. Some nights, he talked. Other nights, he didn’t.
Instead of questioning, I simply said:
- “I’m here if you want to talk.”
- “That sounds tough.”
Listening wasn’t about the stories anymore. It was about showing up for the man behind the badge.
Where Are You in the Journey?
Most police spouses move through these stages. Maybe you’re still intrigued. Maybe you’re in the worry phase. Or maybe you’ve realized that listening isn’t about the job—it’s about being there for the person who carries it.
