The radio crackles—another domestic violence call. We respond. The OODA loop kicks in—observe, orient, decide, act. The victim is terrified, the suspect defiant. We separate, interview, assess. Empathy fights with the need to stay focused.
But the call doesn’t end when we clear the scene.
- The report is scrutinized.
- The supervisor reviews it.
- The prosecutor decides if it moves forward.
- If it does, the defense attorney picks it apart.
- If it goes to trial, we wait—will justice be served, or will it fall apart?
The Weight of Cumulative Stress
Now imagine this process not once, but hundreds of times. Every call adding another layer of stress. Every decision questioned, every scene leaving its mark.
We don’t think about it because we’re trained not to. The job demands we keep moving, but the stress doesn’t disappear. It builds.
- The exhaustion.
- The short temper.
- The numbness.
- The damaged relationships.
This is cumulative stress—the silent weight officers carry until it becomes too heavy.
Managing the Weight
For years, I thought this was just part of the job. I was wrong. The stress will always be there, but it doesn’t have to control us.
- Recognize the weight. This isn’t weakness; it’s reality. Acknowledge the stress before it takes its toll.
- Lean on your spouse. They see what the job does to you. Talk about what you’re carrying, and listen when they tell you something’s off.
- Prioritize decompression. Find healthy outlets—exercise, hobbies, faith, therapy. You can’t pour from an empty cup.
- Don’t wait until it’s too late. If you’re struggling, seek help. You’d tell a fellow officer to back you up in a fight—why wouldn’t you do the same for your mental well-being?
The job will always demand more. But recognizing the weight we carry and managing it ensures we can serve with honor—without losing ourselves in the process.
